Which of the following best represents a nominal scale?

Select one or more answers

7

For nominal or ordinal scale variables, what should typically be reported in the results?

Explanation

Qualitative data is non-numerical and descriptive, often focusing on meanings, experiences, emotions, and behaviors. It’s typically collected through interviews, observations, or open-ended survey questions, and analyzed using thematic or content analysis.

Quantitative data is numerical, allowing researchers to use statistical tools to identify patterns, test hypotheses, compare groups, and make predictions. Statistical methods include techniques such as descriptive statistics (e.g., mean, median, standard deviation), Inferential statistics (e.g., t-tests, ANOVA, regression), as well as Frequency analysis, correlation, and other methods. These tools are appropriate because they rely on the assumption that the data can be measured and manipulated mathematically.

Operationalization is the process of transforming a broad, abstract concept, such as leadership, motivation, or love of cats, into something that can be measured or observed in a consistent and systematic manner. For example, if you want to study “job satisfaction,” you need to decide how you’ll measure it. You could use a survey with rating scales, the number of times someone praises their job in an interview, or perhaps their attendance record.

This is a quantity question, as it asks for a numerical value.

Nominal scales classify data into distinct categories without any order.

Only interval and ratio scales have equal intervals between values, which is a requirement for calculating meaningful means and standard deviations.

For nominal and ordinal variables, the appropriate descriptive statistics are absolute frequency (N) and relative frequency (%), as measures like mean and standard deviation are not meaningful for these scales.
