Explanation

Mauritius was formed through volcanic eruptions millions of years ago. Lava from the ocean floor built up into land, creating the island’s mountains, craters and valleys. This natural event shaped the beautiful landscape we see today.

Trou aux Cerfs is a dormant volcano in Curepipe, formed during Mauritius’s second volcanic phase. It hasn’t erupted for thousands of years, but its crater still shows how powerful nature can be!

The ebony tree is native to Mauritius because it evolved naturally on the island. It’s part of our unique biodiversity and has deep ecological and historical importance.

The dodo is famously associated with Mauritius because it was found nowhere else on Earth.

A timeline is used to record the past because it shows events in the order they happened. This helps us understand cause and effect, see patterns, and connect people and events across history.

Arab sailors were the first known to reach Mauritius during the Middle Ages. They named the island Dina Arobi, meaning “Abandoned Island,” and marked it on early maps. Their voyages helped reveal Mauritius to the rest of the world!

The Dutch arrived in Mauritius in 1598 during their voyages to Asia. They were exploring new trade routes and needed stopover points for fresh supplies. Mauritius was uninhabited and perfectly located, so they claimed it and named it after Prince Maurits of Nassau.

The Dutch struggled to settle in Mauritius because of harsh weather, poor soil for farming, and attacks by rats that ruined crops. They also didn’t find the gold and riches they hoped for. After many failed attempts, they abandoned the island in 1710.

The French named Mauritius “Île de France” in 1715 to honor their homeland and mark the island as part of their colonial empire. It became an important stopover for trade and naval power in the Indian Ocean.

Mauritius gained independence on March 12, 1968, ending British colonial rule. The national flag was raised at Champ de Mars, marking the birth of a free and proud nation!
