Explicación

Boiling water is an effective way to make it safe for drinking because high temperatures kill harmful bacteria, viruses, and parasites that can cause diseases. While boiling does not remove solid impurities or chemicals, it is one of the simplest and most reliable methods to disinfect water, especially in emergencies or when clean water sources are not available.

Decantation is a process used to separate heavier solid particles or insoluble substances from a liquid by allowing them to settle at the bottom of a container. Once the solids settle, the clear liquid on top can be carefully poured out. This method is commonly used in water purification before filtration to remove large sediments. However, decantation does not eliminate dissolved substances or microorganisms.

Filtration is a process used to remove solid impurities, such as dirt, sand, and debris, from water by passing it through a filter. The filter can be made of materials like cloth, sand, or activated carbon. While filtration helps clean the water by removing particles, it does not kill bacteria or viruses, so additional purification steps like boiling or chemical treatment may be needed to make the water safe for drinking.

Distillation is one of the most effective methods of water purification because it relies on the process of evaporation and condensation. When water is heated to its boiling point, it turns into steam, leaving behind most impurities, including salts, heavy metals, and microorganisms. The steam is then cooled and condensed back into liquid form, producing highly purified water. However, some volatile chemicals with lower boiling points than water may still be present, which is why additional filtration or activated carbon treatment may sometimes be necessary.

The chlorination process involves adding chlorine or chlorine-based compounds to water, where it reacts with organic and inorganic materials. The chlorine kills harmful microorganisms by breaking down their cell walls and disrupting their metabolic processes. Some chlorine remains in the water as a residual disinfectant, preventing future contamination during storage and distribution. Proper dosing is crucial—too little chlorine may not fully disinfect the water, while too much can produce harmful byproducts, such as trihalomethanes (THMs), and affect the taste and safety of the water.
