A steamship is a ship powered by steam. The Great hall is the place where all immigrants arrived after they got off the ship. The manifest is an official document listing the names of all passengers.

Ellis island was used as an immigration station from 1892 until 1954, so for 62 years.

All you needed to do was buy a steamship ticket and your name was automatically reported to the passenger list, which in turn was given to immigration inspectors at Ellis Island.
