Throughout Europe, the Roma minority faces severe discrimination and other human rights violations. We created this exercise to let you learn about these - we used real-life examples here!

This activity offers you two sets of cards. One set features articles (A) from the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) as well as its Protocols (P). The other set includes real-life cases. Many Roma people face these problems in their everyday life, and state authorities often fail to help them, even though they are supposed to protect their citizens.

Find out which human rights were violated in each case: first, click on the Article, then click on the cases connected to it. Note: there may be more than one case for some of the articles.

Prison officers beat up a friend of mine, just because he is a Roma. Police officers got away with hitting Roma during interrogation. Our mayor slapped and spat at me in the City Hall, in front of the entire town. A5: Everyone has the right to liberty and security of person. Policemen regularly stop me on my way home, looking for something I supposedly stole. My mother was carrying a basket full of food, and a policemen stopped her to check if they had been stolen. A8: Everyone has the right to respect for his private and family life, his home and his correspondence. I was hit by my neighbour, but the police refused to help me. The police fails to listen to my complaints when strangers throw stones at my house. A policemen forced to open one of my envelopes because they thought I had cocaine in it. P1, A2: No person shall be denied the right to education. We are put to special classes with children with learning disability. My teacher told me that she would never help me prepare for the exam. In my village, every Roma child has to go to a school where teachers are worse than elsewhere.

A2: Everyone’s right to life shall be protected by law.

My brother came close to dying while he was interrogated by police officers.
