Activity that emulates certification-like tasks. por Ariel 1 Plants get the carbon dioxide they need the air through their leaves . The gas moves through tiny holes on the underside of the leaf . These holes are called stomata . 2 Guard cells control the size of the stomata . This helps leaf avoid losing too much water when the weather hot , windy , or dry . 3 The lower part of the leaf has a soft layer made up cells that are not close together . There are small spaces between these cells , a bit like the spaces in a sponge . These spaces allow gases move through the leaf . 4 Stomata allow carbon dioxide to enter the leaf and oxygen , which is produced during photosynthesis , to leave it easily . In many plants , the stomata open during the day and closed at night .
