More than migrants from Iraqi Kurdistan were kidnapped in Libya while trying to travel to the UK last summer . The were captured by an armed militia group . The group demanded $5 , 000 from each family and threatened to the migrants ? kidneys if the money was not paid quickly . Some of the migrants have now returned home and spoke to the BBC about their terrible experiences . They said they beaten , tortured , and forced to live in very crowded cells . One former hostage said 178 people were kept in one small room . There was only one toilet , and many people had to sleep up because there was not enough space . The migrants had paid a smuggler named Noah Aaron to help them travel through Libya and across the Mediterranean Sea to . However , the militia claimed Aaron had not paid them money from an earlier deal . Because of this dispute , the migrants were kidnapped and used for ransom . Noah Aaron is now in in France for money laundering and human smuggling crimes . Another smuggler , Kardo Jaf , was recently arrested after a BBC investigation . Both men are believed to have worked together in the past . Families of the received shocking photos and videos from the kidnappers . In one video , a young man was told he would be taken to a doctor to have his removed . Some returned migrants showed scars on their bodies that doctors said looked similar to from kidney operations . However , there is still no final proof that organs were . Many families paid the ransom to save their relatives . In January , more than 100 released were flown back home by the Iraqi government . Libya is known as a dangerous place for migrants because many armed groups control different of the country . Human trafficking and kidnapping are common there . Officials in Iraqi Kurdistan are warning people not to the dangerous journey to Europe . However , many migrants still continue to leave , hoping for a better .
