Many people in Korea are very angry with Starbucks because of a big mistake in a new advertisement . In May 2026 , Starbucks Korea started a special sale for a large coffee cup the " Tank " tumbler . They named this event " Tank Day " and used a slogan about hitting a desk . However , the started this advertisement on May 18 . This specific date is a very sad and important day in Korean history . On May 18 , 1980 , the military government used real army tanks and soldiers to hurt and kill many innocent people who were protesting for . The slogan also reminded people of a student activist who was hurt and died in 1987 . Because of these choices , Korean citizens felt that Starbucks was making fun of their history and the people who died for freedom . Korean customers became so furious that they started to boycott the company , delete the Starbucks app , and even smash their cups . This caused Starbucks sales to drop very quickly . To try to fix the problem , the big bosses of the company a public apology on television and the head of Starbucks Korea was fired immediately . Even the main Starbucks office in the United sent a letter to apologize to the victims and their families . Today , many Koreans are still and angry because they feel a big business should respect a country's and human rights .
