Life in Japan can be very difficult because puts a lot of pressure on ordinary citizens . For example , young students must study very to get perfect grades , and adults must work incredibly long hours to be successful . When someone fails an important school , loses a good company job , or experiences severe workplace bullying , they often feel deep shame . To these negative feelings , they decide to lock themselves away from the outside world completely . This lifestyle choice creates a problem for Japanese families . Parents often feel embarrassed about the situation , so they keep it a and do not ask doctors for help . As these parents grow older , they worry constantly about who will look after their adult children in the . Fortunately , the Japanese government and helpful non - profit groups are now working together to fix this crisis . They are opening modern centres and sending trained social workers to visit these homes . These kind workers try to build trust slowly and the hikikomori to step outside their quiet rooms .
