After four years of war with Russia , images of destroyed and huge numbers of soldiers killed have become familiar . However , there is another serious that is not so easy to see : the soil of Ukraine may now be polluted and unsafe for farming . Because of this , scientists from the Royal Agricultural University in England and Sumy National Agrarian University in Ukraine have started studying the long ? term impact on the . Their research shows that much of the soil contains dangerous heavy such as cadmium , cobalt , copper , zinc , and nickel . These substances can be toxic to humans and may remain in the soil for many years . Ukraine is often the " breadbasket of Europe " because before the it was one of the world ? s largest exporters of grain and sunflower seeds . Losing farmland to could harm Ukraine ? s economy and global food supplies . According to Ukrainian officials , more than 800 square kilometres of soil have already been affected , and over one million craters have been found . Researchers collected more than 8 , 000 soil from battle areas . Interestingly , they discovered that bomb craters were not the most polluted places . The highest levels of toxins were found near burned tanks , destroyed , and crashed drones . This finding gives some hope . Scientists say that farmers do not need to abandon all damaged fields . Instead , they can identify specific " hotspots " that need to be avoided or cleaned . Experts are now with Ukrainian authorities to teach farmers how to isolate contaminated areas and how to the soil safely .
