der / die / das already show the grammatical gender of the noun.
Therefore, the adjective only needs the ending -e.
→ der kleine Hund
→ die schöne Stadt
→ das alte Haus

With ein / eine, we cannot always see the gender:
ein can be masculine or neuter.
So the adjective must show the gender:
Masculine: add -er (similar to der) → ein kleiner Hund
Neuter: add -es (similar to das) → ein kleines Haus
Feminine: add -e (because eine already shows feminine) → eine schöne Stadt

Important: Only adjectives that come before a noun take an ending.
Adjectives that come after “sein” or other verbs do not take an ending.
→ Der Hund ist klein.
→ Die Stadt ist schön.
