Joseph was buzzing . Like full - on bouncing up and down , shouting at seagulls' kind of buzzing .

" We have to climb it ! " he said , pointing at the m sand like it was E

" I need to see the from the top ! "

I glanced at my sister , who raised an eyebrow . The dune was massive - at least 70 feet tall , steep , and looked like it swallowed flip - flops and dreams alike . But Joseph was already halfway up , so we , reluctantly , followed .

The beach was stunning . The sun hung low . Casting a golden glow across the sand like someone had spilled glitter . The sea shimmered red and orange , waves gently lapping the shore , whispering secrets only the wind could hear . Seagulls squawked overhead , sounding like they were laughing at us . They probably were .

Climbing the dune was like trying to walk up a collapsing cake . Every step we took sank back down , and the sand got everywhere - socks , ears , even my mouth at one point . Joseph , of course , was loving it .

" This is the BEST DAY EVERRRR ! " he yelled , arms flailing like a victorious .

After what felt like a century ( but was probably only about forty minutes ) , we reached the peak . The view was worth it . The beach stretched endlessly across the golden horizon , the sea sparkled like a disco ball , and the wind whipped around us like nature ? s applause .

Jospeh stood at the very edge , arms wide .

" I 'am the k ing of the world ! " he declared .

Then came the .

We turned . A dog - small , scruffy and indubitably possessed - charged at Joseph as if he ? d insulted its mother . Before any of us could react , the dog lunged , Joseph screamed , and both of them disappeared over the edge .

Gone . Like a bad magic trick , the k ing of the dune had fallen , the flags were at half - mast .

Silence filled the air , then our shouting did .

" Joseph ! " we shouted , desperately trying to hold in our laughter as we scrambled towards the edge . Nothing but sand , broken twigs and a single trainer tumbling down like a sad symbol of defeat .

We spent the next three hours searching . THREE HOURS . We slid down the dune , combed through , called his name like we were in a dramatic soap opera . My sister even went full blown Sherlock , and tried tracking footprints , which was futile because the sand was basically a giant .

Defeated , sunburnt , and covered in sand , we trudged back to the caravan . Our parents were going to kill us . Grounded for life ? Maybe sent home early ? Maybe even disowned ! We burst through the door , ready to confess .

" Mum we ? re really sorry , " my sister began , in her nervous ramble , " but Joseph - he got attacked by a dog and fell down the dune and we couldn't find him and - "

" What do you mean you lost Joseph ? " Mum asked , eyes wide .

Then came the voice .

" Oh , hey guys " Joseph said , mouth full of cookie dough ice cream , lounging on the sofa like he hadn ? t just been declared missing . " where ? ve you been ? "

We stared . .

" I landed in a bush , about a quarter of the way down , " he said , casually . " Walked back a couple hours ago . Thought I ? d let you two enjoy the search . "

I looked at my sister . She looked at me . We looked at Joseph .

After what he just put us through we were ready to finish the job the dune started , and take him out , but we didn ? t , we just laughed .

Because of course . Of course , Joseph would plumet of a sand dune , survive a dog attack , and end up eating ice cream while we played detective .

The king of the dune had returned , the flags back at full mast .

And he was still wearing just the one trainer and plastered in his battle scars .

So , after all our triumph , after all our energy and searching , he had gone for ice cream .
