Perhaps your coworker is skilled at their job and was recruited precisely for that reason , but they haven't learned to speak the local language yet . What can you do to overcome this potential barrier ? Learn a few key phrases . For a moment , put yourself in your coworker's shoes . Imagine that you have accepted a job in a foreign country and you do not speak the language yet . Now imagine that one of your new coworkers has learned a couple of phrases or expressions in your language . How would that make you feel ? Certainly , it would strengthen your relationship with that person and form that will help increase your productivity as a team . Of course , depending on the circumstances , specific language training would also likely be necessary for the benefit of the new employee and the existing team . You could also learn about your coworker's culture .
