Identify components of the cell membrane.

por Jan Barbee
1

The outer layer of the cell consists of a that is responsible for materials into and out of the cell . This would include items like
water , ( salts and minerals ) , sugars and proteins . The membrane is , meaning that only certain sized materials can enter and leave . It consists of two layers that resemble round balls with two tails . This creates a region in the middle between the two layers and water layers inside and outside of the membrane . In addition , special molecules called proteins are embedded into the layers to facilitate the movement of specific molecules . proteins are also present for identification purposes in the cell . Lastly , molecules are present allowing cells to communicate with other cells and interact with chemicals in the cellular fluids .

Movement across a semipermeable membrane that does not require energy is called transport . Examples would include like the movement of small molecules such as salt or gases . In this case , molecules move from an area of concentration to an area of concentration until they reach ( balance ) . Even then , molecules continue moving , but at equal rates .

The process of can also be passive and involves the movement of water across a membrane . This creates a gradient where one of three possible situations can arise . In an solution , there are equal amounts of water and salt on both sides of the membrane . In a solution more salt is outside the membrane , thus pulling water outside the cell leading to ( shrinking of the cell in size ) . In a solution more salt is inside the cell drawing pulling in water and creating pressure known as produces pressure . Too much of this pressure can cause the cell to ( explode ) .

Facilitative Diffusion ( sugar transport ) is also passive , but uses special channels which allow diffusion of certain small molecules . The last form a transport is Transport that requires energy from the cell . pumps use electric current and magnetism to draw ions from salts to pull water molecules along with it , thus regulating the pressure . Endocytosis and exocytosis also require energy . One type of Endocytosis is or wrapping the membrane around a molecule or organism & engulfing it . The other is which takes in water . takes material into the cell while transports materials outside .
