Greenland is semi-autonomous today, though Denmark retains arthority over some of its affairs. 4 New Zealands town of Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu holds the record for the longest place name in the world. 5 The Mediterranean Sea is connected to the Atlantic Ocean by the narrow, yet deep, Gibraltar Strait; to the Indian Ocean by the Red Sea (by way of the Suez Canal); and to the Black Sea by the Sea of Marmara & the Dardanelles. 6 90% of the wildlife in Madagascar is found nowhere else in the world! In fact, all species of lemur, only found in the wild here, are considered sacred animals. 7 Henry Hudson, owner of the first major fur-trading company in North America, discovered this bay in 1610. It is connected to the Arctic Ocean via the Foxe Channel and the Atlantic Ocean via the Hudson Strait. 8 Microscopic crustaceans act as natural filters in Lake Baikal, not only keeping the water crystal clear, but also replacing the massive volume of water about every 23 years. This lake contains more freshwater than all of N. Am. Great Lakes combined! 9 Chile is known primarily as the world's leading producer of copper, a top producer of wine, and sovereign nation to Rapa Nui (Easter Island) which is known for its enormous moia stone statues. 10 In addition to the Tasmanian Devil, this Australian state also has some of the oldest (albeit slowest growing) trees on earth and many areas (one-fifth of Tasmania is a World Heritage Area) that are accessible only by foot! 11 With some truly extreme weather, this easternmost point in the U.S. was a notable spot during WWII between the bombing of Dutch Harbor and the Japanese invasion of Kiska and Attu. 12 As the International Date Line runs between these sister islands, the U.S.'s Little Diomede is often called "Yesterday Island" while Russia's Big Diomede is referred to as "Tomorrow Island."
