Almost everyone has friends , but ideas about friendship differ from a person to person . For some , a friend can be a person chats with you on the internet . For others , a friend is someone has known you all your life . What one person defines as a friend , another class acquaintance , and vice versa .
As you see , definitions of friend can vary a lot within a single culture . Imagine the differences between cultures . In Russia , for example , friendship is a relationship emphasizes sharing your inermost feelings . Friends are people know each other " behind the soul . " In Mexico , it is a lifelong commitment , and a friend is someone becomes part of your family and help you in all areas of your life . Anthropologist Margaret Mead compared notions of friendship in some Western countries . She says :
