Sensitive to feedback ? Here's how to change

As a student you are probably aware that after each English session your coach will send you , via the platform , a class report . This class report , or feedback , is designed to help you improve your English and includes entries marked 'new words' , 'mistakes' , 'pronunciation' , and 'other' . Now , be honest , do you pay as much attention to the entries labelled 'mistakes' as to the others ? Moreover , when it comes around to the annual performance review with your boss , do you listen as carefully to the criticism as you do to the praise ?

So here's where we arrive at a very curious characteristic of most people ? all of us want to succeed , but we often choose to ignore the tools designed to help us achieve our goals . We want to learn another language , we want to get promoted , or perhaps we want to earn more money . But here's the ; when other people , people , like coaches or managers , want to suggest ways of improvement by pointing out , through 'constructive' criticism , what we are doing wrong , then most of us would rather not hear .

Why is this ? Well , according to psychologists , it's our fragile that are partly responsible . It's a natural reaction . Criticism poses a threat to our - and so we adopt a series of cunning tactics , many of which we are unaware of , to remain positive and unchallenged by this danger . This defensive reflex can be a real barrier to our progress . So , in addition to being aware of the problem , what can be done to guard against this - response ?

In the first place , it is important to seek feedback not only from the people that we know think well of us , but also in areas that we know we excel . For this reason , the introduction by many companies of the 360 degree feedback should be welcomed rather than feared . It is much more difficult to adopt either of the two most common forms of defense against negative feedback if it comes from multiple sources , unlike criticism that comes from only one source , not everyone can be blamed for your . Similarly , comparisons might be made with numerous others , and not just a few individuals that you can find fault with .

Research , unsurprisingly perhaps , has found that people with high self - esteem are much readier to accept constructive feedback . It seems like a good idea , therefore , to work on this and to try to build self - confidence in advance of the assessment . By doing this , we are far more likely to take the criticism on board and use it to further improve our performance .

Another problem appears to be that we are apt to convince ourselves that we never asked for the feedback in the first place . It appears that this 'unwanted' feedback can be easily dismissed as . Instead , it is suggested that we persuade ourselves that we actively chose to participate in the assessment so we can be more likely to think that it was an enjoyable experience . So the next time you receive the personal assessment form , instead of sighing and thinking : 'What now ? ' , embrace it with a positive attitude , a chance to your talents and list your achievements . In that way you are putting on some armor against the that may be coming your way .
