Everyone online makes it look so artistic and rewarding . , you see these beautiful loaves on Instagram , and you think , " How hard can it be ? " Well , let me tell you . , it starts with creating a 'starter' , which is this bubbly mixture of flour and water that you have to feed every day . It's supposed to capture wild yeast from the air . , it felt more like I had adopted a very boring , needy pet . Mine didn't look like the pictures online . , it just sat there in its jar , looking sad and flat . No bubbles . Nothing . , after a week of faithfully feeding it twice a day , it still looked completely inactive . I was starting to think maybe the air in my kitchen didn't have any yeast ! , my friend , who's an amazing baker , took pity on me . She gave me some of her active starter . Success , right ? Well , I tried making the bread dough , following the recipe exactly . But it was so sticky ! I was drowning in dough ; it was all over my hands , the counter , everywhere . I thought about just throwing the whole gloopy mess in the bin . , I didn't , I persevered ! I eventually managed to shape it into something resembling a loaf and baked it . The result ? Let's just say it was . . . rustic . Very dense . It wasn't the artisan masterpiece I'd envisioned . It tasted okay , but yeah , maybe I'll stick to buying my bread from the bakery from now on !
