polluted overload work deadlines ventilation

Do you work in a sick building ?

We all have heard about how too much work can make people feel sick . You or your colleagues may feel stressed from too many or . People who work in open offices get colds and the flu more easily , but sometimes , people are literally sick from working in their buildings . This strange situation is known as 'sick building syndrome' and it has happened to workers in hospitals , offices , and even libraries . Strangely , it seems to affect workers in newer and more modern buildings . Sick building syndrome costs companies billions of dollars every year because employees cannot work . So , what causes a building to become sick ?

In the 1970s , many women who were working in new buildings began to complain about their health . They felt cold , tired , had coughs , dry eyes , skin problems , breathing difficulties , and headaches . The experts did not believe these women , because none of the men had these problems ? at that time , men usually had separate or bigger offices ? and it was hard to believe you could get sick in an air conditioned , carpeted office . It seemed like a very safe space compared to working in a factory or a mine . Years later , it was discovered that the problem was caused by bad ventilation . Because of the oil embargo of 1973 , was lowered to five cubic feet per person to save energy . This was like being on an airplane ten hours a day , five days a week . No wonder the workers felt ill ! Nowadays , the ventilation has been raised to 20 cubic feet per person .

It would be normal to think that indoor air is better than outdoor air , but sometimes that is not true . Employees who work in skyscrapers in the city may be breathing some air . Some offices are above parking garages or places where trucks stop to deliver their products . The car fumes and construction dust can easily get into a building . Smokers might be outside smoking near an air vent which goes back into the office . Printers and fax machines contain gases and dust , which may make people feel sick . Fluorescent lights and computer screens can give workers headaches as well as paint , cleaning products , chemicals , and even new carpets . Also , most employees who work in a smart building cannot even open a window to let the fresh air in .

Many employees worry about long - term effects of working in a sick building . If you think you are one of them , here are some things you can do :

? Ask the building manager to come and inspect the building .
? Don't put anything in front of the air vents .
? If you are a smoker , smoke away from the air vents outside .
? Get some office plants . Don't water them too much and don't let them dry out either .
? Keep food in a fridge , clean it regularly , and throw away bad food .
? Empty the garbage bins and keep your area clean .
? Many issues are simple and are caused by problems with heat , humidity , or light . Check these three areas to see if something is not working well .
