Bigger animals hunt smaller animals for food. This is a huge problem for the smaller animals. To solve this problem, the prey need to develop ways to outsmart their predators. One amazing defense mechanism that some lizards developed is called autonomy. When attacked, certain lizards can actually detach their tails from their bodies. The tail keeps wagging for several minutes or more, distracting the predator. Meanwhile, the lizard scurries off to safety, solving the lizard’s immediate problem. When Americans settled the Midwest, they were challenged by tough soils that resisted their cast iron plows. The Midwest contains some of the richest soil in the world, yet many settlers concluded that the soil was unsuitable for farming because they couldn't break ground. John Deere's steel plow changed all of that. Deere's plow was stronger and lighter than the iron plows people had used up until then. This allowed settlers to open up the tough but rich soil in the Midwest and unlock its agricultural potential. His invention became known as "The Plow that Broke the Plains," and it helped American farmers feed the world. In 1835, James Bowman invented the light bulb, which uses electricity to make light. This invention caused huge changes across the world. In a basic sense, this new and easy way of creating light meant that it was now much easier to perform tasks after dark. As a result of the light bulb, businesses could stay open later. Homes and streets were now better lit for nighttime activity. It also made things safer, as the gaslights that were used before light bulbs could be very dangerous. Thousands of software patents are granted every year, and while some of these patents protect good ideas, others just hurt consumers. For example, Amazon was granted a patent giving them the exclusive rights to any process that allows customers to buy a product with a single click. Amazon sued Barnes and Noble when they tried to implement a similar button. Because of the patent that Amazon was granted, Barnes and Noble customers have to navigate through multiple checkout pages to purchase an item. Imagine if McDonald's were allowed to patent the drive-thru window and sued Burger King for having one. Sometimes patents affect consumers negatively A butterfly's life cycle comes in four stages. First, a butterfly lays its eggs, which take only about five days to hatch. In stage two, a caterpillar emerges from the egg and starts eating everything in sight. When the caterpillar is done growing, it enters stage three and begins making a protective shell called a chrysalis. Inside the chrysalis, the caterpillar turns into a butterfly. In stage four, the chrysalis opens to reveal a beautiful butterfly. Eventually, it lays eggs, and the cycle begins again. Louis Armstrong was born to a poor family in Louisiana. He grew up in a rough neighborhood under the care of his grandmother and uncle. Armstrong learned to play trumpet by ear at age 11. After getting arrested for firing a gun in the air while celebrating New Years Eve, he was sent to a juvenile correctional house. He received musical instruction while he was detained and Armstrong soon led the intuition’s band. Armstrong would go on to change the face of jazz. Chefs are hard at work in the kitchen of Village Pizza. One man sings an opera song in Italian as he flings dough in the air again and again. Flour sprinkles about the room like snow flurries as the dough stretches wider and wider with each nimble toss. You can hear a sizzle from the grill. Suddenly, the sweet smell of green peppers fills the room. The restaurant is not busy, but your senses certainly are. The ice-cream shop around the corner from my house has the best ice-cream in the city. When you first walk inside, there is a long chrome counter with matching stools extending to alongside the far wall. Right where the counter stops, the booth seating begins. There are lots of old-timey knickknacks on the walls and chrome napkin holders on all the tables. My favorite part of the shop is behind the counter glass, where they keep all of the ice-cream flavors. A rainbow of delicious sugary flavors is kept cool and delicious behind the counter glass. Biking and running are two of the best kinds of exercise. Both are full of health benefits, including keeping your heart healthy and lowering stress. In addition, both are convenient. Often, you can just step out your front door and get going all by yourself. Biking does require a bike, of course, which can get expensive, while running just requires sturdy shoes. Biking, on the other hand, is easier on your body since your joints aren't pounding into the ground with each step. What would jazz be without a swinging brass section? One of the signature instruments of the jazz band is the trumpet. Trumpet players change notes by positioning their fingers in different ways on the instrument’s valves. Another swinging instrument used in jazz bands is the trombone. Trombone players change notes by moving the instrument’s slide into various positions. Each of these instruments contributes in different ways: trumpets can play higher notes but trombones can play richer low notes. Most jazz bands have both.
