The proclamation of Imam al-Mahdi as Imam in Raqqada in North Africa led to the beginning of this empire. Before this empire arose, our dais and Imams faced numerous challenges like - hiding their identities, travelling long distances, danger to their lives, and so on. Just like the Imams before them, the Fatimids promoted knowledge and supported scholarship and learning They founded some great institutions of learning like The al-Azhar Mosque and University and the Dar al-Ilm. A great number of thinkers, writers, scientists, philosophers and other scholars rose to prominence in the Fatimid era. Some well-known scholars and intellectuals were: Ibn al-Haytham, Dai al-Kirmani, Dai al-Shirazi and Dai Nasir Khusraw. New cities were designed and built with features that allowed the improvement in the quality of lives of the people residing in them The Fatimids founded new cities - Al-Mahdiyya, Al-Mansuriyya, Al-Qahira Governance of the new Fatimid state was done with fairness, equity and keeping merit in mind. The Fatimid Imam-Caliphs’ actions and decisions showed that they were able and ethical leaders who took decisions for the good of the people and the empire. Fatimid Cairo was major cultural centre of the Muslim world that allowed the production of beautiful art and craft masterpieces. The last Imam-caliph had to deal with difficult challenges and many crises during his reign. There were years of famine, drought, and plague, leading to poor harvests, food shortages and increased prices. People were unable to pay taxes due to a weak economy and so the military troops weren’t paid and began revolting. Other groups of people in Spain (Christian Kingdoms) and Syria (Saljuq Turks) grew powerful and weakened Fatimid rule further. Deep divisions and rivalries at the court were created leading to a split in the Ismailis after the Imam al-Mustansir bi’llah’s death. The rightful successor Imam Nizar was killed too. The Nizari Ismailis didn’t give up after Imam Nizar’s death and kept challenging the next leaders. Later the Nizari Ismailis set up an Ismaili state in Persia based in Alamut.
