Their countries are safe. 5 Asylum seekers are criminals. Asylum seekers cannot choose where they live, they generally are detained. The housing they get is not paid for by the local government. It is nearly always housing that other people do not want to live in. Although asylum seekers may apply for work authorization after their case has been pending for 150 days, the uncertainty of their future impedes employment, education, and trauma recovery opportunities. Asylum seekers are much more likely to be victims of crime than criminals. Most asylum seekers coming to the US are fleeing countries where there is war or violence. There is no such thing as an 'illegal' asylum seeker. Under international law anyone has the right to apply for asylum.
