Rubeola (measles) is characterized by Koplik spots, that look like "grains of salt on a reddish background"

Infants are given IM injections in the vastus lateralis or anterolateral thigh muscle

A capillary heel puncture is generally used to get a small amount of blood from infants, particularly newborns.

a butterfly needle is not used for a capillary heel puncture.

classical sign of scarlet fever is a "strawberry tongue." other s/s includes a sandpaper-like rash absent from the palms and soles. diptheria: a tough leathery membrane on the pharnyx. measles: koplik spots. mumps: swollen parotid glands.

This child shows signs of diptheria. Strict droplet precautions should be taken in addition to maintaining bed rest, antibiotics, antitoxin, and airway management. No rash with diptheria.

Macrolides are the drug of choice for pertussis. Azithromycin is the only drug used for patients under 1 month.

Children who have varicella may present first with a maculopapular rash that progresses to vesicles on erythematous bases, which eventually rupture and crust over.

Measles (Rubeola) is airborne

varicella is no longer contagious once ALL vesicles have ruptured and have crusted over

Whooping cough, aka pertussis, is prevented by the DTaP and Tdap vaccines (along with diphtheria and tetanus. However, DTaP is only indicated for those younger than 7 because the full strength diphtheria toxoid in DTaP has significant adverse reactions for those over 7 years.

Hib protects against infections from bacteria Haemophilus influenzae B, which causes severe life threatening illness in those under 5 years old like meningitis, pneumonia, severe throat swelling, sepsis, etc. It does not protect against viruses like HIV or Hepatitis B.

Being immonocompromised or in close contact with an immunocompromised person, pregnancy, being a 2-4 year old with asthma or history of wheezing, or children taking salicylates like aspirin are contraindications for the LAIV. Regarding egg allergy, ATI states: "The CDC currently recommends that a client who has a history of egg allergy can receive any recommended and age-appropriate influenza vaccine, regardless of the severity of the allergy. The vaccine should be administered in a medical setting by a provider who can recognize and respond to severe allergic reactions."

Tdap is given once every 10 years.

Influenza vaccine is given yearly. Meningococcal conjugate is single. Meningococcal is a series. idk

MMR, rotavirus, live attenuated influenza vaccine, and varicella vaccine are the only live vaccines

Infant respirations are diaphragmatic, so the nurse should count abdominal movement for one minute to get accurate respiratory rate in infants (younger than 1 year).

Skin turgor should be taken over the abdomen for children less than 3 years old (infants and young children). Skin turgor for those 3 years and older will be assessed using the skin over the clavicle.

FLACC (~2m-7y) is used when a child cannot accurately report pain level. It uses: facial expression, legs, activity, cry, and consolability.
