The harp is a string instrument.

2

The saxophone is made of brass. It is a brass instrument.

3

The piano is both a percussion and a string instrument.

4

The trombone was considered a divine and sacred instrument. Up till the early 19th century, composers did not use trombones in music outside of oratorios, masses and other religious music.

5

The contrabassoon is the smaller sibling of the bassoon.

6

According to 18th and 19th century accounts, claps, stomps and loud shouts were commonplace reactions to orchestral music during that time.

7

Going as far back as ancient Greece, conductors have been an important part of orchestras and music ensembles.

Feedback

Although a little different from other string instruments, the pedal harp (what they use in the orchestra) is a string instrument. Sound is produced when a harpist plucks the strings with his/her fingers and thumb and the strings vibrate.

While it is typically made of brass, the saxophone is a woodwind instrument. Sound is produced when the single reed, which is a small strip of woody cane, vibrates. A brass instrument on the other hand, produces sound when the lips vibrate in a mouthpiece cup.

It is both. You hit its keys with your fingers and the keys lift hammers inside the piano. The hammers strike the strings, causing them to vibrate, which then produces sound. But sound is produced by striking the string rather than using a plucking method or a bow, which makes it a percussion instrument too.

It gained its divine reputation from the fact that the trombone has a range similar to that of the human voice and is capable of producing stunning harmonies during concerts. But Beethoven, the rebel that he was, broke this 'rule'. He was the first to use trombones in a secular symphony. Check out Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op. 67.

The contrabassoon is the largest, lowest non-brass woodwind instrument in the orchestra. It is so long that the tubes are folded over.

Claps, stomps and cheers were all part of the audiences' reactions. In fact, composers often worry if audiences did not react during the performance. It was said that Johannes Brahms thought that his first piano concerto was a complete failure because there was hardly any audience reaction.

Conductors weren't used until the early 1800's. They only became necessary when composers started making works that we more complex and for more instruments. Before that, to help musicians keep time, composers would use a large staff and pound it loudly onto the floor. This does not always end well. In 1687, Jean Baptiste Lully stabbed himself in the foot while conducting and eventually died of gangrene.
