1

You have just triaged a child with a fever and need to give the child Tylenol as ordered. Once calculated, you have written down an answer of 6.1875 mL as the result. How many mL should the child receive? Round to the nearest tenth.

2

You have performed a dosage calculation for a gtt/min question and received an answer of 63.38 gtt/min. What would be the correct answer choice?

3

A child weighing 20 kg is prescribed 5 mg/kg per dose. How many mg should be given?

4

Infuse 1000 mL over 8 hours. What is the rate in mL/hr?

5

Amoxicillin 250 mg PO q8h. If tablet strength is 125 mg, how many tablets per dose?

6

Dexamethasone 0.5 mg IV every 6h. The IV solution is 2 mg/mL. How many mL per dose?

7

Acetaminophen suspension 160 mg/5 mL. Dose is 320 mg. How many mL?

8

Insulin 0.5 units/kg. Patient weighs 60 kg. How many units?

9

Lorazepam 2 mg IV push. Available 0.5 mg/mL. How many mL to give?

10

Infuse 900 mL over 12 hours using 60 gtt/mL microdrip. Rate in gtt/min?

11

Heparin infusion at 18 units/kg/hr. Patient weight 70 kg. Rate in units/hr?

12

Amikacin 15 mg/kg/day divided q8h. Patient 30 kg. Dose per administration?

13

A patient weighs 72 kg and is prescribed dopamine at a rate of 7 mcg/kg/min. The concentration available is 400 mg of dopamine in 250 mL of D5W. At what rate in mL/hr should the IV pump be set?

14

A 6-year-old patient is admitted with pneumonia and mild dehydration. The following orders and events occurred during your 8-hour shift: Intake: IV fluids: D5 0.45% NaCl at 60 mL/hr for the entire shift. Oral fluids: 180 mL of juice at breakfast, 120 mL of water at lunch. IV antibiotic: 50 mL infused over 30 minutes, twice during the shift. What is the total intake for your shift?

15

Feedback

We need to round to the nearest tenth, and 6.1875 rounded correctly rounds up to 6.2. We can give 6.2 and safely measure that in a syringe. 6.1875 could not be accurately measured.

Remember that for drops, you can't give a partial drop. Therefore, it has to be a whole number and 63.38 rounds down to 63 since the tenth place is a number less than 5.

Find ordered dose in mcg/min 7 mcg/kg/min × 72kg = 504 mcg/min Convert drug concentration to mcg/mL 400 mg=400,000 mcg in 250 mL 250 mL⇒400,000/250=1,600 mcg/mL Calculate mL/min 504 mcg/min Divided by 1,600 mcg/mL = 0.315 mL/min Convert to mL/hr 0.315 mL/min × 60 = 18.9 mL/hr Keep the tenth place because of it being a critical drip (more precise calculation based on weight).

IV fluids 60 mL/hr x8 = 480 mL + 300 mL oral fluids (180 + 120) + 100 mL antibiotics (50x2) = 880 mL

100 mL/0.5hr = 200 mL/hr
