After donating its electrons, NADH becomes:

4

Which statement is TRUE about Coenzyme Q?

5

If 2 QH₂ molecules each release 2 H⁺ into the intermembrane space, how many H⁺ are released in total?

6

What is the lipid-soluble molecule that accepts electrons from Complex II and carries them to Complex III?

Written answer

7

A transport protein that transfers electron to complex IV.

Written answer

8

Formed due to the movement of hydrogen ions from the mitochondrial matrix to the intermembrane space.

Feedback

(Complex II): The energy released from transferring electrons through Complex II is too low, so it lacks the power to pump protons.

(NAD⁺): NADH is an electron carrier; when it loses (donates) its electrons, it becomes oxidized back into its empty form, NAD⁺.

Coenzyme Q acts as a mobile traffic hub, collecting electrons from both Complex I and Complex II and delivering them to Complex III.

(4 H⁺): Each of the 2 individual molecules releases 2 protons, so you simply multiply them together (2 x 2 = 4)

(Coenzyme Q): This molecule is unique because it is a lipid, allowing it to dissolve and freely float inside the fatty core of the membrane.

(Cytochrome c): Unlike Coenzyme Q, Cytochrome c is a water-soluble peripheral protein that slides along the outside of the membrane to drop electrons off at Complex IV.

Pumping protons into a confined space creates a high concentration outside and a low concentration inside, forming a chemical gradient.

(Intermembrane Space): This is the narrow structural "waiting room" between the inner and outer membranes where protons are trapped to build up pressure.

Oxygen has a very high affinity for electrons; it pulls them to the very end of the chain and combines with protons to form harmless water (H2O)
