What is Descriptive Text?

Descriptive text is a text that describes a particular person, place, animal, or thing by explaining its characteristics, appearance, qualities, or features so that readers can imagine it clearly.

The Social Function of Descriptive Text

  • To describe a specific person, place, animal, or thing.
  • To give detailed information about its characteristics.
  • To help readers visualize the object being described.

Generic Structure of Descriptive Text

1. Identification

Purpose:

  • Introduces the person, place, animal, or thing.
  • Tells the reader what will be described.
  • Gives general information about the object.

Purpose:

  • Describes the object in detail.
  • Helps the reader imagine the object clearly.

Language Features of Descriptive Text

1. Adjective

  • Adjectives are words that describe or give more information about a noun.

Example : My classroom is clean and tidy

2. Pronoun

  • Pronouns are words that replace nouns to avoid repetition.

Example : Alya is my best friend. She is kind and helpful.

3. Nouns

  • Nouns are words that name people, places, animals, or things.

Example : The library has many interesting books.

4. Adverbs

  • Adverbs describe verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs.

Example :  She always helps her classmates.

5. Simple Present Tense

  • The Simple Present Tense is used to describe facts, habits, routines, and general characteristics.

Pattern

  • Subject + Verb 1 (+ s/es) + Object
  • Subject + is/am/are + Complement

My cat likes sleeping on the sofa.
