Key genetics terms explained

1

You inherit 23 chromosomes from Mom and 23 from Dad. The chromosome #1 from Mom and Chromosome #1 from Dad are a pair. They are the same size, same shape, and carry the same genes in the same spots, but they might have different alleles (e.g., Mom's

2

Before DNA replication, a chromosome is one long molecule of DNA.

3

After replication (in Interphase), that single strand copies itself. It becomes a chromosome made of two identical sister chromatids stuck together at a centromere.

4

During Prophase I of meiosis, the maternal double-stranded chromosome and the paternal double-stranded chromosome find each other and squeeze together. This bundle of 4 chromatids (2 sisters + 2 sisters) is called a tetrad.

5

When the chromosomes are packed into that tetrad, the inner non-sister chromatids physically overlap, break, and swap pieces of DNA.

6

When the homologous pairs line up in the middle of the cell, they do so completely randomly. Mom's chromosomes don't all stay on the left, and Dad's don't all stay on the right. They mix randomly, meaning every gamete gets a unique combination of you

7

is a physical error during cell division. Instead of chromosomes separating smoothly to opposite sides of the cell, a pair fails to separate.

8

The Result: Gametes with the wrong number of chromosomes. If a gamete with an extra chromosome (n+1) meets a normal gamete (n), the resulting zygote will have 3 copies of that chromosome instead of 2.

9

If a gamete is missing a chromosome (n−1), it causes a monosomy (e.g., Turner Syndrome, XO).

10

The 'Blend' pattern. How to spot it: The problem describes a third, completely intermediate (blended) phenotype.

11

The 'Both' pattern. How to spot it: Both traits show up clearly at the same time. No blending.

12

The X-Chromosome trait. The rule: Always write genotypes using X and Y. Males are XY, females are XX.

13

Sample problem: A carrier female for a colorblind trait (XBXb) has children with a normal-vision male (XBY).

14

A carrier female for colorblindness (XBXb) has children with a normal-vision male (XBY).
