1

Adaptive Information Reprocessing model. As the cornerstone of EMDR therapy, the model guides clinical practice.

2

Bilateral stimulation is any stimulation—visual, auditory, or kinesthetic—that addresses both the left and right sides of the brain in sequence.

3

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy; primary focus is on reducing anxiety.

4

Subjective Units of Disturbance measures the level of distress associated with an incident/event.

5

Validity of Cognition: Measurement of how true the selected positive cognition feels when paired with the target incident/event.

6

The negative self-belief associated with the unprocessed and dysfunctional negatively stored incident/event.

7

The positive belief which reflects the client’s desired direction of change.

8

The components of memory: Trigger (or target), Image (or other sensory aspect of the memory), Cognition, Emotion, and Sensation.

9

A memory that lays the foundation for the client’s current presenting issue or problem. This is the memory that formed the core of the maladaptive network or dysfunction.

10

Incident/event selected for reprocessing in the Assessment phase. It may be a touchstone memory or a past- or a present-day experience.

11

Present stimuli that set off a disturbing memory or reaction (e.g., the smell of alcohol on someone’s breath, angry look on someone’s face).

12

During the Preparation (and Stabilization) phase of EMDR therapy, the clinician teaches the client various ways of building, enhancing, and accessing internal resources, positive memories, and strengths.

13

Round-trip passes of eye movements. In terms of Shapiro’s train metaphor, a set of bilateral stimulation (BLS) is tantamount to the train traveling from one train station to the next.
