"Quench" is the direct equivalent of "apagar" — both evoke extinguishing a flame. It is the NKJV term used in 1 Thessalonians 5:19. "Put out" is informal and non-biblical. "Grieve the Spirit" (Ephesians 4:30) translates "contristar," a different verb meaning to sadden, not to extinguish.

The simplest way to convey it is to use the verb to imply, avoiding literal translations such as "To give the understanding that". 🔎 “Les da a entender “El Señor viene…” (Ver: https://bit.ly/4cx9iff) ❌ “He gives the understanding, “The Lord is coming…” ✅ “He implied, “The Lord is coming…”

Both "become fond of" and "become attached to" describe emotional connection, but "become fond of" is purely positive, while "become attached to" can be positive (attachment to God, the Church, the Word) or negative (attachment to worldly things or sin). For this reason, "become attached to" is preferred.

While we’ve used other variations in the past, we advise that you do your best to use only the phrasing “have a good testimony” for consistency purposes. Other expressions to avoid include, but are not limited to: give a good testimony, bear a good testimony, be a good testimony.

Avoid the literal translation "giving freedom to the Spirit," as "giving someone freedom" suggests emancipation from captivity, which does not capture the intended meaning. Instead, use "give free rein to the Holy Spirit." While "give free rein to" often carries a negative connotation when paired with a vice (e.g., "give free rein to his greed"), this does not apply here, since we are pairing it with a Person — the Holy Spirit. "Release the Spirit" would imply the Holy Spirit is confined or restrained and needs to be let out.

The preferred translation of "consultar a Dios" is "inquire of God" (or "inquire of the Lord"), as this reflects consistent biblical phrasing found throughout Scripture (1 Samuel 10:22, 1 Chronicles 14:10) . Alternatives such as "consult God" or "ask advice from God" should be avoided as they lack doctrinal precision and can imply seeking advice from a peer. In broader usage, "consult" is also associated with consulting mediums, diviners, or false prophets.

The direct equivalent of "disponer" is "prepare", as this is the most common term used in the Bible in this context (Ezra 7:10; 1 Samuel 7:3; 2). While "set" also appears in the NKJV (Daniel 10:12; Psalm 78:8), "prepare" remains the preferred choice. Additionally, always use a possessive determiner when referring to the heart — "prepare your heart" or "prepare our hearts" — never the definite article "the."

The correct translation of "tener un corazón dispuesto" is "have a willing heart," as confirmed by Matthew 26:41: "The spirit indeed is willing." Avoid "have a willful heart" — in English, "willful" carries a negative connotation, implying stubbornness or obstinance. Avoid "have a set heart" as it is not a natural English expression.

The preferred interpretation of "rendir cuentas a Dios" is "be held accountable to God," adjusting the phrase to fit the context. Literal interpretations such as "render accounts to God" should be avoided. For example: 🇪🇸 Todos rendiremos cuentas a Dios de nuestros actos. ❌ We will all render accounts to God for our actions. ✅ We will all be held accountable to God for our actions. "Give accounts" tends to sound administrative or financial in English, which diminishes the spiritual weight of the expression.

The preferred interpretation of "seguir adelante" is "press on," as it is succinct, encouraging, and biblically grounded (Philippians 3:12). "Press forward" is also acceptable, though less established. Avoid overly literal expressions such as "continue forward," "move forward," or "keep moving forward," and informal alternatives such as "keep going" or "carry on."

"Kneel in prayer" is the direct equivalent of " doblar rodilla". Bow in prayer" is less specific, as bowing does not necessarily imply kneeling. "Kneel down in prayer" is acceptable but redundant, since kneeling already implies the downward movement.

The preferred interpretation of "pasar a profecía" is "sit down to receive prophecy." Literal interpretations such as "he passed to receive prophecy" or "she went to prophecy" should be avoided, as they do not correspond to the cultural or idiomatic context of English.

Avoid the literal interpretations "practice sin" or "do a sin." The natural English equivalents are either the verb "sin" (1 John 3:8) or the verb "commit" when "sin" is used as a noun (John 8:34; 1 John 3:4).

The direct equivalent of "andar/vivir bien" is "lead a righteous life / live righteously." Avoid "walk well / live well," as these lose the moral and spiritual weight of the original. Avoid "walk righteously / live a right life" — the former is overly literal and archaic, while the latter is grammatically awkward, as "right" reads as a direction rather than a moral quality.

The direct equivalent of "andar mal / vivir mal" is "lead an unrighteous life / live unrighteously." "Walk bad / live a bad life" and "walk bad / live bad" may sound grammatically incorrect and lose the moral and spiritual weight of the original.
