A playful clue about comparing parts.

por Mia Collins
1

I’m a humorous way to compare two parts of a whole—left part to right part. I tell you how many times bigger one piece is than the other, usually written as a over b or with a colon. What am I?

Hints

Hint 3: It’s a basic idea used to show how parts relate to each other, not the whole itself.

Hint 2: It can be written as a fraction a/b or with a colon a:b.

Hint 1: It compares two quantities.

2

In a barnyard census, the animals have different numbers of legs: a mouse (4), a flamingo (2), a cat (4), and a spider (8). If you add these leg counts and divide by how many animals there are, you get one number that describes the group’s central tendency. This playful hum blends with family of measures and asks for the mathematical idea behind it. What concept am I describing?

Hints

It is often referred to as the average in everyday language.

This concept summarizes a set with a single representative value.

Think of what you do when you add several values and then divide by how many values there are.

3

I’m a number that has no end, I never repeat, I just extend. I start with 3 point 1 4, In circles, you’ll see me evermore. What am I?

Hints

It’s used in circle formulas.

4

I’m part of a whole, but not quite a slice, I’m written with dots, which is rather nice. I’m not a fraction, but close in a way, I show place value every day. What am I?

Hints

You see it in money.

5

I have three sides and three angles too, Add my angles, you’ll get a clue: The sum is always the same, you see, No matter what shape you make of me. What am I?

Hints

Three sides, three angles.

6

I’m the middle of a number line crew, Not the biggest or smallest, but fairly true. Line them up from least to most, I stand in the center, like a host. What am I?

Hints

Line up the numbers first.
