Feedback

Combustion reactions always involve oxygen.

A reducing agent removes oxygen in a reaction. It gets oxidised because it gains oxygen in the process.

Fe from Fe2O3 (focus on the reactant substances only, not the products) is the oxidizing agent. It gets reduced because it loses oxygen in the process.

A molecule of oxygen (O2) gas contains two oxygen atoms.

Rusting of iron: 4Fe + 3O2 + 6H2O→ 4Fe(OH)3 is an example of oxidation reaction when iron (Fe from the reactant) is oxidized / is gained oxygen.

A CO molecule (focus on the reactant substances only, not the products) gets oxidised because it gains oxygen in the process. Therefore, it acts as the reducing agent (removes oxygen from another substance).

A reducing agent removes oxygen in a reaction. The reducing agent gets oxidised because it gains oxygen in the process.

Ions are atoms that have gained or lost electrons, not protons.

Metals react with acids to form salt and hydrogen gas, not metal oxides. Meanwhile, metals react with oxygen that will produce metal oxides, such as 2Zn (s) + O2 (g) → 2ZnO (s) or zinc metal + oxygen gas → zinc oxide.

From Mg + CuO → MgO + Cu: Mg is oxidised because it gains oxygen; CuO is reduced because it loses oxygen; Mg is the reducing agent because it removes oxygen from CuO (focus on the reactants only). Mg gets oxidised because it gains oxygen from CuO. CuO is the oxidizing agent because it provides oxygen (focus on the reactants only). CuO gets reduced because it loses its oxygen to become Cu.
