Feedback

The foregut is mainly supplied by the coeliac trunk, which provides arterial supply to structures such as the stomach, liver, pancreas, and proximal duodenum.

The superior mesenteric artery is the main blood supply to the midgut, including the distal duodenum, jejunum, ileum, caecum, appendix, ascending colon, and proximal two-thirds of the transverse colon.

The major duodenal papilla marks the transition between foregut and midgut in the duodenum, making it an important anatomical landmark.

: The jejunum is a midgut derivative. The stomach, liver, and oesophagus are all foregut derivatives.

The first part of the duodenum is intraperitoneal, while the rest of the duodenum is mostly retroperitoneal.

The small intestine is the main site of nutrient absorption. Its folds, villi, and microvilli increase surface area to make absorption more efficient.

Meconium ileus usually causes obstruction at the terminal ileum, where thick meconium becomes impacted.

Meconium ileus is strongly associated with cystic fibrosis because CF causes thick secretions, which can make meconium abnormally sticky and difficult to pass.

Meconium ileus is a neonatal condition and usually presents in newborns, often within the first 24–48 hours of life.

In meconium ileus, the bowel is obstructed because the meconium is unusually thick and sticky, preventing it from moving normally through the intestine.
