Postmodernists do not think there can be one universal definition of crime due to diversity and changing culture.

Fragmentation refers to the breaking down of traditional meta narratives that would form our identities. We now make our own choices and decisions and therefore crime is caused by emotional factors.

Society today is characterised by choice and freedom.

Risk society is where people are now more aware of factors that affect their lives due to the media and globalisation - this is causing an increase in hate crime.

A hyperreality is where it is hard to tell the difference between fact and fiction. In the media, we see examples of 'fake news'.

Crimes now exist across borders and the global criminal economy is now worth $1 trillion annually.

According to Foucault surveillance is linked to the concept of the panopticon and is everywhere. This weaves discipline into everyday life as we always 'might' be watched and caught.

This process should mend harm and should not be bias towards the victim.

Crime is caused by diversity and individualisation.

There cannot be one single definition due to complexities around choice, individualisation, emotion and globalisation.
