There is a TV-Film adaptation of Their Eyes Were Watching God. And, in true Hurston fashion, it is not far from controversy. There are some casting and writing choices which seem to confirm the good old saying: The book is always better than the film (or at least in this case). 3 Real life romance? Tea Cake’s character is based on a short-lived relationship which Zora Neale Hurston had with a Haitian man during a research trip to Haiti. 4 Science or superstition? Lake Okeechobee is a real lake. In his 2019 book The Great Okeechobee Hurricane of 1928, Wayne Nealy accounts for the knowledge which the Seminoles had about natural signs of an upcoming hurricane. The idea that sawgrass prematurely bloomed before a flood or a hurricane was a widespread belief among Seminole and other Native American tribes. Nealy’s book provides anecdotal accounts of similar experiences among Native American populations. 5 This was actual Cancel Culture After false rumours and fake accusations of sexual misconduct, Hurston’s work was blacklisted and forgotten for decades until Alice Walker took an interest in her literary production. The first anthology of Hurston’s work, I love myself when I am laughing ... and then again when I am looking mean and impressive: a Zora Neale Hurston reader, was edited by Walker, with an introduction by Mary Helen Washington. 6 But who was she? Hurston’s first biography, Zora Neale Hurston: A Literary Biography, was published by Robert Hemenway in 1977. All the gossip about the original Tea Cake and her multiple scandals can all be found here (although you should be reading it for the literary facts, shouldn't you?). 7 What about a peace offering? Fancy some southern food? Food is mentioned multiple times in the novel due to the historical and cultural context in which it is set. Janie’s best friend, Pheoby, brings her “a plate of mulatto rice”, which must have been a popular recipe in 1920’s southern culture. However, we don’t actually know what Hurston meant by “mulatto rice” but people have tried to take a guess and create potential recipes.
