With next month’s case targets rising by 10%, and half your team exceeding expectations while the other half has been very close to meeting the target, what action will you take to meet the new performance target while maintaining your team’s well-being?

2

Last month, two of your team members not only met but exceeded their targets, each with very different personalities: one more reserved, the other more outgoing. As a leader, what is the best way to recognize them?

3

You noticed that a usually proactive specialist has become quieter in meetings, responds briefly in chats, and has stopped volunteering for initiatives. Their performance is still acceptable, but noticeably less engaged. How can you best help in this scenario?

4

A deadline is approaching, and a reliable performer offers to take on additional tasks to “help the team.” You know they are already managing multiple high-impact deliverables. What is the most responsible leadership response?

5

You were transferred to lead a new team, and during your performance reviews, you realized that one of the top performers has received more responsibilities but few developmental opportunities over the last quarter. What should be your next step as a leader?

Feedback

Validating that everyone's work distribution is fair would be the most effective decision because it demonstrates intentional leadership through realistic load assessment, targeted coaching, and sustainable performance planning. It avoids the performance-punishment trap by not overloading high performers while also developing those close to the target, thereby strengthening overall team capacity. Other options overlook the team's well-being entirely or put a heavy burden on the top performers.

Tailored recognition based on a person's preferences is the best way to show genuine appreciation for their hard work, alongside any public and financial rewards. Doing so positions you as a leader who prioritizes Human Connection First and understands your team's needs. Other options focus on a one-size-fits-all approach, and that is not effective in the long term. It is necessary to go beyond the basics and truly provide what each team member wants most: to feel appreciated and thriving.

Scheduling a private meeting to deep dive and truly understand what's happening shows attentiveness to behavioral changes and a genuine desire to promote psychological safety. Other options are too reactive or may create discomfort and reduce trust in leadership, showing that problems are assumed without diagnosis.

Assessing the team's capacity and redistributing it, if needed, before adding more work to one of your top talents demonstrates responsible decision-making under pressure. Taking the time to provide the necessary resources and support shows your interest in setting the person up for success. Other options do not balance operational needs with sustainable performance and leadership accountability. They show unintentional bottlenecks and reduced team ownership.

Recognizing what development matters most to your high performers transforms leadership from assigning tasks to nurturing growth, ensuring agility and sustained excellence. Other options are unrealistic, too condescending, or may confuse or demotivate without context. They also risk damaging team morale and psychological safety.
