This means you must be at least 17 before starting the licensing process, which includes theory and practical tests and medical checks. The age is chosen because it is considered the minimum maturity level to handle a vehicle safely.

A no-passing line means you cannot cross the centre line to overtake. You may overtake on your own side if: You do NOT cross the no-passing line, You have at least 100 metres of clear visibility ahead, It is safe to do so. Example: If a slow vehicle is partly in the shoulder, leaving room for you to pass safely without crossing the line. The 100-metre rule ensures you can complete the manoeuvre safely.

Hand signals are used if brake lights are not working or visibility is poor. To signal stopping: Extend your right arm straight out the window, Bend your forearm upward at a 90-degree angle with your palm facing forward. This warns other drivers that you are slowing down or stopping.

The rule gives priority to vehicles on your right. When approaching a roundabout: Vehicles already circulating have right-of-way, Vehicles approaching from your right also have priority. This ensures smooth traffic flow and prevents collisions.

Pedestrians always have priority, even if traffic lights allow cars to move. Drivers must yield (wait) until pedestrians finish crossing, protecting vulnerable road users.

When both roads have multiple lanes: Start your right turn from the lane closest to the centre line, Finish in the lane closest to the centre line of the new road.

You may pass on the left if your lane has multiple lanes and the vehicles in the right lane are: Going straight, or Turning right. This is safe because they are not turning left, so you can move ahead without conflict.

You must not enter an intersection unless you can fully clear it. Blocking intersections disrupts traffic and endangers pedestrians, even if the light is green.

A flush median is a painted centre area. You may use it to: Slow down safely before a right turn, Wait for a gap in traffic, or Merge into traffic after a right turn. It is only for short, controlled use—not for travel over distance.

On open rural roads, the general speed limit is 80 km/h unless signs indicate otherwise. Rural roads may be narrower, winding, or less maintained, so this speed provides a safe balance between efficiency and control.

Helps prevent rear-end collisions. To apply the rule: Pick a landmark, When the vehicle ahead passes it, count “one-thousand-and-one, one-thousand-and-two,” If you reach the same point before finishing the count, you are too close. This ensures sufficient time to react and stop safely.

An amber flashing light near a pedestrian crossing signals: Pedestrians may step onto the road, Drivers must slow down, watch carefully, and be ready to stop. It is a warning to exercise extra caution.

Children under 8 generally require child restraints. Once they reach 8, they can use a regular seat belt that fits properly across the shoulder and lap. This protects smaller children whose bodies are not suited to adult belts.

If you damage property, you must attempt to contact the owner immediately. If you cannot, or if required by law, report it to the Police within 24 hours to ensure accountability and proper documentation.

Wet roads increase braking distance. Double the normal following distance to 4 seconds to allow enough space for stopping safely if your vehicle begins to slide or brakes take longer.

Common prohibited parking areas include: On a pedestrian crossing, Within 6 metres of an intersection, On a yellow line, On a footpath, On a bridge, In front of a driveway. These rules maintain visibility, emergency access, and smooth traffic flow.

When a school bus is stopped to load or unload children, vehicles in either direction must slow to 16 km/h. This very low speed protects children who may cross unexpectedly.

On steep hills, vehicles going downhill must give way because uphill vehicles may have difficulty restarting if stopped. It is safer for the downhill vehicle to stop than risk blocking uphill traffic. This rule prevents rollbacks and keeps traffic flowing safely.

The L-plate indicates that the driver is learning. Other drivers should expect possible mistakes, give extra space, and be patient. The L must be clearly visible from both the front and rear to warn all road users.

You must be able to see at least 100 metres of clear road ahead before overtaking. This ensures there is enough distance to safely pass another vehicle without colliding with oncoming traffic or obstacles like bends or hills.

A police officer directing traffic has authority over traffic lights and road signs. Drivers must slow down, watch carefully, and follow the hand signals exactly. This keeps traffic safe and orderly, especially in congested areas or when signals fail.

You must bring your vehicle to a complete stop before the limit line or stop marking. If your view of oncoming traffic is blocked, move forward slowly and stop again until you can see clearly. Only proceed when it is completely safe.

A red arrow controls a specific turning lane. For example, a red right arrow means you cannot turn right, even if the main traffic light is green. This ensures vehicles in that lane do not enter a conflicting flow of traffic.

Signalling at least 3 seconds before changing lanes gives drivers behind and in the adjacent lane enough time to see your intentions and adjust their speed or position. This reduces the risk of collisions.

KNOW: Plan your path, lane, and who you must give way to. SHOW: Indicate your intentions clearly using signals and proper vehicle positioning. SLOW: Reduce speed approaching intersections to observe traffic and pedestrians. GO: Proceed only when the path is safe and clear, preventing accidents.

Staying on the left allows faster vehicles to overtake safely. It keeps traffic moving and prevents impatient drivers from attempting risky overtakes.

Centre Line: Short lines with longer gaps indicate the middle of the road. Warning Line: Long lines with shorter gaps warn of hazards such as bends, intersections, or hills. They indicate that overtaking is becoming dangerous.

All occupants in vehicles carrying up to 9 people must wear seat belts (1 driver and 8 passengers). This rule applies to smaller vehicles like cars and vans and helps reduce injuries in accidents.

Your first responsibility is to human life, not the vehicle. Stop immediately, check for injuries, assist within your ability, and call emergency services. Failing to stop is a serious offence.

Skidding happens when tyres lose grip with the road. Heavy acceleration spins wheels, heavy braking locks them, sudden steering shifts weight, unsealed roads reduce traction, and wet surfaces reduce friction.
