The Olympic Games started more than 2000 years ago in Ancient Greece, in the city of Olympia. They were held every four years and dedicated to the gods, especially Zeus. Athletes competed in running, wrestling, discus and javelin throwing, and chariot races. Women were not allowed to participate in these games. The first modern Olympic Games took place in Athens, Greece, in 1896. Today, the Olympic Games are held every four years, with the Summer and Winter Games alternating every two years. The Olympic flag with five rings represents the five continents: Africa, America, Asia, Europe, and Oceania. During the opening ceremony, athletes recite the Olympic Oath.
