What is Statistics?

Statistics is the science that deals with collecting, analyzing, interpreting, presenting, and organizing data.

Types of Statistics

There are two main types: Descriptive statistics and Inferential statistics.

Descriptive Statistics

Descriptive statistics summarize data using measures such as mean, median, mode, range, and standard deviation.

Inferential Statistics

Inferential statistics draw conclusions that extend beyond the data, using sample data to make inferences about a population.

Activity: "Fact or Fiction?" "statistics" (some true, some made up):

"85% of people use their phone within 15 minutes of waking up"

"100% of lottery winners regret their win within 5 years"

"7 out of 10 dentists recommend this toothpaste"

"The average person spends 6 months of their life waiting for red lights"

"90% of statistics are made up on the spot" (ironic!)

  • Trick 1: Small Sample Size"3 out of 4 people prefer our product!" (But they only asked 4 people)
  • Trick 2: Manipulated GraphsY-axis doesn't start at zero, making small differences look huge
  • Trick 3: Cherry-Picking DataOnly showing the time period that supports your claim
  • Trick 4: Vague Language"Studies show..." (Which studies? Who conducted them?)
  • "Up to 90%..." (Could be 1%, could be 90%)
  • Trick 5: Confusing Correlation with Causation"Ice cream sales and drowning deaths both increase in summer, therefore ice cream causes drowning!" (No - hot weather causes both)
