Feedback

Broca’s area, located in the left frontal lobe, controls the muscles and planning needed to produce speech.

Wernicke’s area helps us understand the meaning of words and sentences we hear; it’s located near the auditory cortex.

The arcuate fasciculus is a bundle of nerve fibers that sends information between the speech production and comprehension areas.

The motor cortex controls movement; the part near Broca’s area manages speech muscles like the lips and tongue.

People with Broca’s aphasia have slow, effortful speech but can still understand others fairly well.

Wernicke’s aphasia causes fluent but confusing speech because comprehension is affected.

This connection allows the brain to combine understanding (Wernicke’s) with speech production (Broca’s).

Language is mainly processed in the left hemisphere, especially in right-handed people.

Neurolinguistics studies how brain structures and functions support language production and comprehension.

Paul Broca found that damage to a specific area in the left frontal lobe caused speech production problems, leading to the discovery of Broca’s area.
