✅ The term bank holiday dates back to the Bank Holidays Act of 1871, when certain days were declared official holidays for banks and their employees. At first, only banks and the stock exchange closed. Later, other offices and businesses began closing too — but the name "bank holiday" stayed in the UK. 💡We usually say “bank holidays” in the plural because there are several each year.

✅In international English, "public holiday" is the neutral term used for a day when most people don’t work. 👉 We only use “bank holiday” when speaking about the UK or Ireland.

💡There is a difference between a NATIONAL day and a PUBLIC or BANK holiday. A PUBLIC or BANK (UK) holiday is a general day off, recognised by the government. A NATIONAL holiday celebrates a key event in a country’s history, like Bastille Day in France. Note: the UK does not have its own national holiday. 🌍Examples of National Holidays USA – Independence Day (4 July) Celebrates the country’s independence from Britain in 1776. Canada – Canada Day (1 July) Marks the anniversary of Canadian Confederation (1867). Germany – Day of German Unity (3 October) Celebrates the reunification of East and West Germany in 1990. Mexico – Día de la Independencia (16 September) Marks independence from Spain. Italy – Festa della Repubblica (2 June) Celebrates the founding of the Italian Republic (1946). France – Bastille Day (14 July) Celebrates the start of the French Revolution (1789)

💡 The campaign for a federal holiday in King's honor began soon after his assassination in 1968. President Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law in 1983, and it was first observed three years later on January 20, 1986. At first, some states resisted observing the holiday as such, giving it alternative names or combining it with other holidays. Official observance in each state's law as well as federal law occurred in 2000.

✅France has around 11 public holidays, while in the UK there are 8 public holidays in England & Wales, 9 in Scotland, and 10 in Northern Ireland.

✅This UK bank holiday is on the last Monday of August and celebrates the end of summer, just before schools and businesses resume their usual routines.
