One of our talented Hammered Dulcimer Artists. (with us since 2015) Communication through Creation John realized at an early age, writing and entertaining was the only way he knew how to communicate or feel seen. “What I write and sing and how I express my creativity is my view of life. I see philosophy, ethics, kindness, and understanding as the roots of my soul.” – Says John 2 John's Storied Career John moved to the Ozark Mountains, and had his own show at Silver Dollar City for 18 seasons. During that time, he flew around the country doing dog and pony shows for the park and appeared on everything from Bozzo to the Today Show. As Branson was a summer gig, he was lured to Arizona in the winter to Rawhide Western Town, where he co-wrote a Vaudeville show with other friends who went with me, composed songs for it, and was the entire pit orchestra as well as acting on stage. 3 John - Coming Home Moving twice a year and forever trying to rent apartments on a short lease became impossible, so he said goodbye to Arizona and returned to the Ozarks full time. Then he met his late wife Jan, and they spent the next 28 years playing together, raising a family, and writing songs. Today, when he isn’t serenading you in the butterfly aviary, John is still busy writing novels and plays! 4 Meet Ilace Mears! One of our talented hammered dulcimer artists. (With us since 2015) An Early Start Ilace started with the violin when she was very young, her first violin was a 1/4 size. It still makes an annual appearance on the Christmas wreath. As a freshman in high school, she realized the benefits of practice when she collected her first paycheck for playing violin in the pit orchestra for the Louisiana Tech. Steady orchestra jobs supplied college tuition funds, her first two (used) cars, and a wealth of experience. 5 Ilace's introduction to the Hammered Dulcimer Around 1980, Ilace and her late husband Ray visited Silver Dollar City in Branson, Missouri. Ilace was intrigued by the sound of an instrument she heard there - a hammered dulcimer. Almost 30 years later, she had a mid-life crisis, decided she didn't have to act responsibly ALL the time, and bought one - a Rick Thum Traveller (it was a pretty mild crisis, actually). The 2006 Memphis Dulcimer Gathering introduced her to a whole new musical world: different repertoire, different techniques, and wonderful new friends from coast to coast. It wasn't long until she recognized the need for an instrument with more notes. She now loves playing a Rick Thum 17/17 Professional with hand-picked walnut sides, maple bridges, and dampers. She plays a Wilkanowski violin and is trying to learn to fiddle. 6 Ilace's Professional Life Ilace's professional life has included teaching first grade and preschool as well as twenty years as an early childhood education administrator. She has also taught violin, piano, and dulcimer lessons; guest-conducted the Monroe (LA) Youth Symphony; rung handbells; directed children's choirs and handbell choirs; and sung in church choirs and a community chorus. Ilace made her workshop instruction debut at the 2011 Memphis Dulcimer Gathering and has since been a very favorably reviewed instructor and performer at festivals and events from Michigan to Louisiana and Virginia to California! Hammered Dulcimer Awards: · 1^st Prize – Southern Regional Hammered Dulcimer Championship (2012 & placing in 2014) · 1^st Place Champion (2016) & 2^nd Place (2015) - National Hammered Dulcimer Championship (Finalist in 2012 too!) Ilace has also played Violin with: Many prestigious symphonies Ray Charles (stage show 3 times) Smokey Robinson (stage show) Dionne Warwick (stage show) Carole Channing (pit for Hello Dolly!) Chita Rivera (pit for Anything Goes) 7 Meet Sheila Thompson! Sheila is a new and welcome addition to The Butterfly Palace. You might catch her filling in for John or Ilace on occasion, and what a treat it is. Sheila and her husband, Bob Thompson comprise The Rusty Strings, a folk singing duo. Specializing in great gospel music in a style hearkening back to the Civil War. They’re a multifaceted group, featuring instruments such as the hammered dulcimer, banjo and mandolin. Sheila is training to receive her certification to be a “certified music practitioner,” something that will allow her to be more effective in providing comfort and care to hospice patients, Alzheimer’s patients and skilled nursing patients. “It’s been scientifically proven, the benefits of music in the healing process,” she said.

Sheila is a new and welcome addition to The Butterfly Palace.

You might catch her filling in for John or Ilace on occasion, and what a treat it is.

Sheila and her husband, Bob Thompson comprise The Rusty Strings, a folk singing duo. Specializing in great gospel music in a style hearkening back to the Civil War. They’re a multifaceted group, featuring instruments such as the hammered dulcimer, banjo and mandolin.
