MOBY DICKVersión en línea

Herman Melville's greatest novel

por Eduardo Tapia Hernandez
1

North-American writer who published the 1851 novel, Moby Dick or the Whale:

2

Romantic story-teller, known for his Extraordinary Tales, where he combines dark settings and the supernatural while talking about death, crime and madness, among other topics.

3

Many critics consider it as the greatest American-novel ever written. Through the voice of Ishmael, a member of the crew of the ship Pequod, it tells the story of Captain Ahab and his pursuit of revenge upon a white sperm whale who took his leg.

4

It's the name of the real ship that inspired Melville's Pequod.

5

Literary movement that underlines the Darwinian vision of the human being: the strongest survive. You either kill or are killed. Violence, the instincts and submission to natural laws are common topics.

6

Movement that emerged out of the French Revolution and its ideals of liberty and fraternity. It underscores passions, irrationality and nationalism. Both good and evil (dark passions and feelings) are portrayed in exagerated or idealized ways.

7

It pursues an objective representation of reality, emphasizing social crude realities and inequalities. It is driven by a photographic and revolutionary spirit in the sense that it denounces injustice and corruption (moral and political).

8

The first mate of the Essex, who inspired Melville's Starbuck. He wrote the testimony "The Wreck of the Essex", one of Melville's research sources for his fictional version of the real shipwreck.

9

The Captain of the Essex, who inspired Ahab, the madman obssessed with the white whale who took his leg in the past.

10

One of the harpooners of the Pequod. Ishmael's best friend.

11

The most mysterious character of the Pequod.

12

One of the Pequod's harpooners.

13

Call me: "____________" One of the most famous beginings of the history of literature. The presentation of the main character and narrator of Melville's greatest work.

14

The third mate of the Pequod

15

The only character of Moby Dick that ventures into questioning Ahab's actions and decisions. It's a very fatalistic and down-to-earth figure.
