FASD is the umbrella term for a range of effects caused by alcohol exposure during pregnancy, including physical, behavioral, and learning problems.

Alcohol's primary teratogenic effect on the developing fetus is caused by its ability to cross the placenta and induce oxidative stress, which leads to cell death and disrupts fetal brain development by interfering with cell growth, differentiation, and gene regulation. This causes lasting structural and functional abnormalities, especially in the central nervous system.

The fetal liver is immature and cannot metabolise alcohol efficiently, leading to prolonged exposure and increased risk of harm.

Organogenesis occurs in the first trimester (weeks 3-8),making the fetus most vulnerable to structural abnormalities from alcohol.

Alcohol interferes with normal fetal development, especially when consumed in moderate to heavy amounts, leading to impaired growth due to disrupted nutrient supply and toxic effects on fetal tissues.
