Definition and Function of Proverbs
Definition: A proverb is a brief, widely known saying that offers advice or expresses a general truth. Functions of Proverbs: - Teach moral values and good behavior.
- Express collective experience and cultural wisdom.
- Strengthen cultural identity and social harmony.
Example: Both “Honesty is the best policy” and “Kejujuran membawa kebaikan” carry the same moral lesson honesty is important everywhere.
Main Values: Individualism, independence, and self-determination. American proverbs reflect the belief that success depends on personal effort and responsibility. Examples and Meanings: - “Time is money.” : Time is valuable and should not be wasted.
