Indonesian culture is more collectivist, meaning it emphasizes community, family relationships, and social harmony. These cultural values shape how people behave, make decisions, and communicate with each other. 3 Education Systems The US education system is decentralized, allowing students more freedom to choose their subjects. The Indonesian system is more centralized with a standard national curriculum that limits subject choices. In the US, learning is more practical and diverse, while in Indonesia, the focus is on theoretical knowledge and more rigid structures. 4 Work Culture In the US, being on time, communicating directly, and achieving personal success are highly valued. In Indonesia, building relationships, showing respect for hierarchy, and reaching group agreement are more important. These differences influence how leadership is managed and how people interact at work. 5 Social Interactions and Freedom of Expression In the US, people are encouraged to speak openly and be assertive in social situations. In Indonesia, indirect communication is often preferred to keep things peaceful and avoid conflict. In Indonesia, communication is high-context, relying more on non-verbal cues, tone, and the surrounding situation. Being polite and using indirect language is very important in Indonesia. 8 Challenges in Cross-Cultural Communication Confusions can happen because of differences in how people show respect, handle time, and view hierarchy. Understanding these cultural differences is key to improving communication between people from different backgrounds.
