Essential amino acids cannot be synthesized by the body and must come from food.

Phenylalanine contains an aromatic benzene ring. Valine has a branched aliphatic (non-aromatic) side chain. Tryptophan contains a larger aromatic indole ring (benzene fused to pyrrole).
