dos and don'ts

1

Feel empowered to draw boundaries with requests or expectations. Learn and repeat the phrase(s): “That is outside the scope of my job.” “That does not fit in with the SI model.”

2

Get bogged down (re)answering procedural questions via email, and allow emails to be a replacement for attending SI sessions.

3

Remember that SI is a peer-to-peer model! Learn names and consider sharing about your undergraduate experiences.

4

Get drawn into an argument or ignore rude behavior.

5

Talk about the class and strategies for being successful in it specific to the discipline.

6

Remind participants that SI is most effective when they come regularly.

7

Remember that there are many definitions of success and many contributions to it, so expand the characterization of how to approach student/academic success.

8

Ask your peers to defend themselves. For instance, if they miss a session, demand an explanation.

9

Feel obligated to fix or solve the problems that participants bring up, especially if they are not academically related.

10

Spend the whole session “giving” participants explanations, notes, lectures, worksheets.

11

Refer to participants in SI sessions as “kids,” “my kids,” or “kiddos."

12

Be responsive to emails from students in the class you’re supporting.

13

Engage in inappropriate conversation topics, criticize or harass participants, or make them feel uncomfortable.

14

Empower participants by making them responsible for their own learning. Knowledge is produced, not distributed!

15

Feel obligated to be available 24/7.

16

Show interest in your peers’ attendance and participation at SI.

17

Focus solely on helping participants score well on examinations.

18

Spend time in sessions getting to know people and letting them get to know one another.

19

Feel obligated to make a “practice test.”

20

Be empathetic. Listen patiently to problems and refer your peers to those persons who are recognized experts with the problem they describe.

21

Forget to redirect questions, provide wait time, and check for understanding as ways to ensure people participate.

22

Promote the goal of self-directed learning – encourage participants to find answers for themselves.

23

Make sure that participants are given more time to talk than you.

24

Participate in conversations that involve bashing the instructor.
