The intervertebral foramina closest to the IR will be demonstrated in the anterior oblique positions (RAO and LAO) when the central ray is angled 15-20 degrees caudal. The intervertebral foramina farthest from the IR will be seen in the posterior oblique positions (LPO and RPO) when the central ray is angled 15-20 degrees cephalic.

Zygapophyseal joints and spinous processes will be seen in profile for the lateral cervical projections. Although superimposed, the z-joints closest to the IR will demonstrate less magnification. Because the z-joints are demonstrated, the superior and inferior articular processes are seen as well. The intervertebral disc spaces, will be demonstrated on all projections if positioned correctly.

When the intervertebral foramina are demonstrated, the pedicles are projected in profile as well. The lateral projection of the thoracic and lumbar spine will show the intervertebral foramina the best.

The zygapophyseal joints lie at a 70 degree angle from the MSP.

The LPO position of the lumbar spine will demonstrate the left zygapophyseal joints (z-joints closer to IR). The z-joints are comprised of the articular process articulations. In reference to the Scottie Dogs, the "ear" represents the superior articular process and because the patient is positioned in the LPO position, this is demonstrating the left superior articular process.

In the anterior oblique positions, the depressed SI joint will be demonstrated with the posterior oblique positions are used to evaluate the elevated SI joint.

The image depicts an AP oblique, RPO position, projection of the thoracic spine. The z-joints farthest (left) from the IR are best visualized.

(A) Right IVF (image is an LPO position) (B) Right pedicle (C) Intervertebral disc space (not defined by right or left as it is cylindrical in shape) (D) 1st rib
