Ladeha believed he was the most handsome creature in the forest. He loved being praised and admired, and he wanted everyone who passed by to acknowledge his beauty. To sit and display himself, he built a small stool out of sand from the riverbank. But as soon as he sat on it, the stool collapsed. Annoyed but not discouraged, Ladeha quickly came up with a solution. He caught two frogs from the river, wore them as earrings, and rebuilt his sand stool with more care. Then he perched proudly on it, waiting for someone to pass.om the river, wears them as earrings, and sits on the sand stool. 2 Just then, a man came walking toward the river. Ladeha jumped up and stopped him. “Hey, human! You want to cross this river? Then first tell me—how do I look?” The man, trying not to laugh, decided to play along. He cleared his throat and sang: “On a sand-stool, a sand-stool, Sprinkled with sandalwood, Sits a wise man who wears Pearl earrings on both ears.” Ladeha grinned ear to ear. “Well said! You may cross.” 3 A while later, a buffalo came by to bathe in the water. Ladeha stood in front of her. “Hey, buffalo! You can only bathe if you tell me how I look!” The buffalo, wanting no trouble, replied in a deep voice: “On a sand-stool, a sand-stool, Sprinkled with gold, Sits a mighty lord who wears Silver earrings on both ears.” Ladeha puffed up with pride. “Very good! You may bathe.” 4 Then came a young calf named Bachhiya. She just wanted to drink some water. “Hey, Bachhiya! Wait!” said Ladeha. “Before you drink, tell me—how do I look?” Bachhiya rolled her eyes. Why should anyone have to flatter this fox just to drink some water? she thought. So, she said exactly what she saw: “On a sand-stool, a sand-stool, Sprinkled with poop, Sits foolish Ladeha who wears Frogs on both ears.” 5 Ladeha’s face turned red with anger. “What did you just say?!” he shouted, leaping toward her. Bachhiya turned and ran. “Aaah!” she cried as her tiny legs moved as fast as they could. Ladeha chased her through fields and trees. Finally, he caught her. Now fuming, he growled, “Alright, Bachhiya. Should I eat you from the top or the bottom?” 6 Bachhiya took a deep breath and quickly said, “Listen, Ladeha. If you eat me from the bottom, poop will come out. If you eat me from the top, wild dogs will jump out!” “Wild dogs?” Ladeha asked, eyes wide. “Yes!” said Bachhiya. “They’re huge! Their teeth are sharp, and their claws are sharper! They’re ten times bigger than you, and they won’t even chew before they swallow you whole!” Ladeha turned pale. “No thanks!” He let go of Bachhiya and ran for his life. “Hey Bachhiya! Wait a bit—let me flee first!” he shouted as he disappeared into the trees. 7 After Ladeha is out of sight, Bachhiya collapses into a fit of laughter. Walking up and down Pasaha river, she relays the story of the foolish Ladeha to everyone.

The buffalo, wanting no trouble, replied in a deep voice:

Ladeha puffed up with pride. “Very good! You may bathe.”

Then came a young calf named Bachhiya. She just wanted to drink some water.

“Hey, Bachhiya! Wait!” said Ladeha. “Before you drink, tell me—how do I look?”

Bachhiya rolled her eyes. Why should anyone have to flatter this fox just to drink some water? she thought.

So, she said exactly what she saw:

“On a sand-stool, a sand-stool,

Sprinkled with poop,

Sits foolish Ladeha who wears

Frogs on both ears.”

Ladeha’s face turned red with anger.

“What did you just say?!” he shouted, leaping toward her.

Bachhiya turned and ran. “Aaah!” she cried as her tiny legs moved as fast as they could.

Ladeha chased her through fields and trees. Finally, he caught her.

Now fuming, he growled, “Alright, Bachhiya. Should I eat you from the top or the bottom?”

Bachhiya took a deep breath and quickly said, “Listen, Ladeha. If you eat me from the bottom, poop will come out. If you eat me from the top, wild dogs will jump out!”

“Wild dogs?” Ladeha asked, eyes wide.
